Synopsis[]

The 7D go undercover to retrieve the Queen's prized knick knack after the Glooms steal it.

Plot[]

The 7D return from the Enchanted Sea an object known as the Pearl of Wisdom—a pearl inside a crystal oyster—which it grants an answer to any question only once from any user. They give to Queen Delightful as a gift, who stored it in her Knick Knack Room. At the Glooms', meanwhile, Hildy intends to enter a radio contest to win a silk cloak encrusted with diamonds (mainly to spite her rival Snazzy Shazam) by solving this riddle before sundown: "What do you call a witch at the beach?" Hildy wants to use the Crystal Ball to solve the riddle, but the radio announcer reminded her not to cheat. After learning about the Pearl of Wisdom and its current location from their Crystal Ball, the Glooms went to the Queen's castle and steal it so Hildy can use it to win the contest. Lord Starchbottom witnessed the theft and told the Queen, who summoned The 7D.

Back at their manor, Hildy has a lot of difficulty trying to open the Pearl of Wisdom (slamming it on the floor, using a hammer and sickle, and even a magic wand is no match for the indestructible oyster shell). However, Grim reads from the Book of Spells that the pearl can only be opened by saying the "magic word". Meanwhile, Doc enacts a plan to retrieve the pearl: Dopey and Sleepy appear as a salesman (Sleepy carrying Dopey on his shoulders) to sell a pair of snails to Grim, Doc and Sneezy as pizza delivery guys, and Happy and Grumpy as Dainty Dwarfs cookie girls. This is to cover Bashful while he's inside the manor to recover the Pearl of Wisdom. Eventually, their cover is blown and the Glooms give chase on their brooms towards The 7D, who now has the pearl.

The 7D passed along the pearl so that Hildy won't get it back, but misfired. Hildy now has it; she's not in concentration as she flies into the bushes, losing the pearl. The Pearl of Wisdom finds its way into Grim, who's in a mud pit below after chasing the dwarfs. Grim desperately asked the pearl to open and after saying the word "please", it finally opens! The pearl then grants Grim the opportunity to ask a question. He asks where Hildy is, and the pearl answers that she is standing beside him, then it closes. Hildy is very angry at Grim because he messed up her chance at winning the special cloak now that is sundown.

Snazzy flies over to the Glooms wearing the diamond-encrusted silk cloak. She then told the Glooms the correct answer to the riddle, which is "a sand witch". With the Glooms miserably defeated and covered in mud, Dopey and Sleepy simply takes the pearl from them and returned it to Delightful's Knick Knack Room. The episode ends with The 7D participated in rolling down the hill along with Starchy (see running gag below).

Featured Songs[]

Running Gag[]

  • Lord Starchbottom had to roll down the hill and injure himself each time he or someone else said "knick knack" because of a game Queen Delightful created based on the nursery rhyme while she also gives a bone-shaped dog treat to Sir Yipsalot (she is very literal minded when it comes to jokes). Also, every time Starchy said or heard "knick knack", he got scared because he knew he would have to roll down a hill (The 7D join him at the final time to close out the segment).

Continuity[]

  • Sneezy's sneezes are weak in this episode. Instead of sneezing a powerful gust of wind, he sneezes saliva. This is the second time Sneezy is seen to be sneezing spit, the first being its sister segment "Bathtub Bashful".
  • Knick Knack Paddy Whack (song) was sung 5 times.

Trivia[]

Cultural References[]

  • The beginning shows all the dwarfs marching and whistling similarly to their Snow White counterparts.
  • Walt Disney's Special Honorary Oscar for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs appears among Queen Delightful's knick knacks.
  • The titular song is based on the song "This Old Man".

Goofs[]

  • Starchy's neck is unusually longer in some scenes.
  • When the 7D says "Knick knack!" to a beaten up Starchbottom when he returns to the castle, Dopey's freckles are missing.
  • When Hildy tries to open the Pearl of Wisdom, the Book of Spells in which Grim is reading switches between an all gray cover and an illustrated cover between shots, also the stars and moons on here coat were there.
